Golwg Y Bryn, Ebbw Vale

One of the many benefits of timber frame construction is speed.  This was the reason developer, Lovell switched from traditional brick and block to timber frame on its partnership housing development in Ebbw Vale.

Lovell senior site manager, Lee Winston, comments:

“Given the weather we experienced up in Ebbw Vale we could not guarantee delivering the build programme to meet our forecasted sales completions.  By switching to timber frame there was a much better chance of achieving this.”

Locality & Experience

Taylor Lane (Wales) was appointed timber frame provider, delivering 57 units on the 100-home development, Golwg Y Bryn – which was built in collaboration with partnerships developer Lovell, registered housing provider Melin Homes, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and the Welsh Government.

The timber frame specialist was selected because of its locality and experience.

“They are a local firm, also having worked with them on previous schemes they have never failed to deliver or achieve programmes set for them,” continues Lee.  “They are also competitive, so cost didn’t come into it when deciding to go with them.”

Exceeding Client Requirements

Taylor Lane (Wales) used its 140mm timber frame system with 80mm insulation, factory fitted VCL and 38mm batten.  This panel build-up exceeds the client requirement for 0.21W/m2K U-value.

Construction work began in July 2019 with the final homes completed in November 2021.  70 properties were available on the open market and 30 affordable properties were handed over to Melin Homes, exceeding the minimum planning specification of 10 per cent affordable homes.

Very Helpful Company

Lee comments on his experience with Taylor Lane (Wales):

“[They are a] very helpful company to work with, from tendering stage through to delivery and erection onsite.  If there were any issues, they were always resolved in the timescales needed.  From a commercial point of view, there was never any issue with finalising their account.”

Benefits of Timber Frame

Construction Director at Taylor Lane (Wales), Liam Hale said:

“We’re thrilled to have supported Lovell on this popular and important development, delivering much needed homes for social-rent and low-cost home ownership, quickly.

“We are also proud that the benefits of timber frame are coming to the fore and acting as a driver for change across UK sites.  Speed is just one reason why developers choose to build in timber frame – environmental benefits such as sustainability, carbon neutrality, thermal performance, and even responsible sourcing, are now all playing a vital role in the specification process.”
